ABOUT US
THE KEMP FAMILY LEGACY
FIVE GENERATIONS OF EASTERN CAPE HUNTING
Lalapa Safaris is owned and operated by Ray Kemp, continuing a family tradition that spans nearly 150 years on the same Eastern Cape land. Based at Langverwacht Ranch and home to Lalapa Safari Lodge, our operation represents generations of deep connection to this country and its wildlife.
Ray grew up hunting these same ranches, learning from his father and grandfather before him. This isn’t a business we bought into – it’s the land we call home, and hunting is simply what we’ve always done here.
EXPERIENCE YOU CAN TRUST
GENERATIONS OF LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
There’s no substitute for knowing the lay of the land, the animals and their habits, movements and behaviour. Our team of professional hunters and experienced trackers have spent their lives in this area.
Our hunting concessions, lodge facilities, and field preparation meet the standards you’d expect, backed by decades of hosting hunters from around the world.
OUR COMMITMENT
OLD-SCHOOL VALUES IN MODERN TIMES
In an era of commercialized hunting operations, Lalapa Safaris maintains the traditional values of ethical hunting and genuine hospitality. Every hunter who walks our land becomes part of a 150-year heritage – a tradition that stands for something deeper than just another hunting trip.
This is our home, our heritage, and our commitment to keeping real African hunting alive for future generations.
MEET THE TEAM
RAY KEMP - Owner & Professional Hunter
Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, Ray Kemp has spent his life in the African bush. As owner and lead Professional Hunter at Lalapa Safaris, Ray brings decades of experience hunting both plains and dangerous game across Africa. His deep knowledge of the land, calm approach, and passion for ethical, free-range hunting define every safari. Supported by Helen and a dedicated team, Ray leads Lalapa Safaris with professionalism and warmth, while passing his wealth of experience on to the next generation of Professional Hunters.
GARY BIRCH — PROFESSIONAL HUNTER
A long-time friend and hunting partner of Ray Kemp, Gary Birch has been part of Lalapa Safaris for over 20 years. The two began their professional hunting careers together, and Gary’s dedication, experience, and high standards have made him one of the most respected PHs in the field.
Known as a tough taskmaster with an eye for perfection, Gary consistently produces exceptional trophies and brings a wealth of African hunting experience to every safari. Though he runs his own ranch, his passion for the hunt keeps him in the bush, while his wife Donnae manages things back home. Around camp, Gary’s deep knowledge, steady presence, and sense of humor make him a valued member of the Lalapa team.
MARK BREETZKE - PROFESSIONAL HUNTER
Born and raised on Eastern Cape ranches, Mark Breetzke knows how to hunt the open ranch country that defines true free-range hunting. Though he runs his own ranch, Mark’s passion for the chase keeps him in the field, where his sharp eye and quiet patience consistently produce top-class trophies.
Warm, friendly, and easy to get along with, Mark is a favorite among clients and staff alike. Young, energetic, and highly skilled, he represents the next generation of Professional Hunters that Ray Kemp is proudly mentoring to carry the Lalapa Safaris legacy forward.
JACK HAYMAN - PROFESSIONAL HUNTER
The “young gun” of Lalapa Safaris, Jack Hayman is one of the most enthusiastic hunters you’ll meet. Careful, methodical, and mature beyond his years, Jack has quickly earned his place among the Lalapa team. Having learned the trade under the guidance of some of Africa’s most experienced Professional Hunters, he brings both energy and precision to every hunt.
Always ready to lend a hand — whether around the fire or behind the bar — Jack’s friendly spirit and passion for the outdoors make him a favorite in camp and a promising name among the next generation of hunters
HELEN KEMP - LODGE MANAGER
The heart of Lalapa Safaris, Helen Kemp ensures that every guest feels at home from the moment they arrive. She manages the lodge with warmth, attention to detail, and genuine Eastern Cape hospitality — making sure each safari runs smoothly both in the field and back at camp.
While Ray leads the hunts, Helen oversees the day-to-day operations, coordinates staff, and adds her personal touch to every meal and moment. Her calm efficiency and friendly nature make her an essential part of the Lalapa experience, ensuring that guests leave as friends and always look forward to returning
BOYSANNA & VUSI - TRACKING TEAM
Although Lalapa Safaris has a strong support crew of trackers, skinners, and recovery staff, Boysanna and Vusi remain the backbone of the operation. Boysanna has been the head tracker at Lalapa for over 25 years, and his son Vusi is proudly following in his footsteps.
Both men grew up on the Langverwacht range and know every ridge, valley, and game trail by heart. Their lifetime of experience tracking, hunting, and working this land makes them an invaluable part of every safari. Few Professional Hunters find success without great trackers — and Boysanna and Vusi are among the very best, doing the hard work that makes every hunt successful.
